Beginning this summer the state will no longer sponsor the TTL academies which have been a familiar sight during the last seven summers.  Last summer marked the end of the Technology for Teaching and Learning Academies which were started in 1997.  During which time approximately 6,900 teachers as well as network administrator, para-professionals, and school administrators have received initial training in the use and integration of technology into education.   Participants have learned basic computer applications, including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets, databases, web authoring, presentation programs and best practices of curriculum integration.

Having created a basic knowledge and comfort level with the use of technology among educators in the state, the Department of Education will now shift the focus of technology related  professional development efforts from learning the tools of  technology to using the tools of technology to continue a focus on improving student achievement throughout the state.  DOE will use the competitive funding from the Enhancing Education Through Technology (ED Tech) Program to help districts analyze their own data, create a plan for quality professional development based on the result of the data, and carry out the professional development with technology being a tool rather than the focus to reach the results.  The efforts will concentrate on the areas of mathematics, reading, and science.

TTL Academies are sponsored by the SD Department of Education.
