What is TTL SA?

The Governor’s TTL Academy for School Administrators is a professional development academy for South Dakota superintendents and principals. It is structured as a two-week summer seminar at the University of South Dakota. Throughout the seminar, computer labs are open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM for participant access. Because of the intensity of the program and the network opportunities, participants are strongly encouraged to reside on campus during the summer seminar in order to benefit from available opportunities to the greatest extent.

The TTL participants do spend considerable time during the Academy learning to use specific hardware and software products. However, education in the Information Age requires that school administrators not only update their skills and knowledge, but also work toward the transformation of their roles as educational leaders. Therefore, the major Academy emphasis is on helping school administrators learn about new roles and strategies that can improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement through the integration of technology into the curriculum. TTL participants will engage in an array of activities in order to achieve this.

Activity examples:

  • Gain hands-on skills on with basic computer applications for enhancing school administration productivity.
  • Learn about current research-based instructional and assessment practices as related to computers and technology resources in the curriculum.
  • Engage in strategies for planning, budgeting, and implementing a school-wide technology program including a professional development component.
  • Learn about processes and instruments for the evaluation of teacher effectiveness in the use of technology for instruction of students.
  • Create and maintain a personal professional portfolio reflective of personal growth in technology tools; curriculum, instruction, and assessment processes; and leadership practices.
  • Develop a strategic plan for providing leadership and support for TTL graduates implementing their knowledge and skills in their respective classrooms.

 Background

As awareness of the impressive impact of the TTL Academy for Classroom Teachers has grown across South Dakota, Governor William J. Janklow identified the need for equipping school administrators with similar knowledge and skills about technology integration for enhancing teaching and learning. By involving school administrators with the TTL curriculum and related topics, the Governor builds the potential for schools to maximize the power of technology for teaching and learning. Consistent with the Governor’s priority for quality training, the TTL Academy for School Administrators provides school leaders with intensive instruction over a two-week period in a technology-rich environment that empowers school administrators to acquire essential knowledge and skills.
